EXPERIENCE FREMANTLE

Friendly, cosmopolitan Fremantle is Western Australia’s chief port and is situated at the mouth of the Swan River just 19 kilometres from Perth. Fremantle was founded in 1829 by Captain Charles Howe Fremantle, in a ceremony which claimed the entire west coast of “New Holland” in the name of King George IV. Convict labour was used to build many of the original buildings in Fremantle and with the arrival of the gold rush, Fremantle soon developed into a thriving port.

Today, much of the colonial architecture remains which makes Fremantle a beautiful and historic city. Fremantle is full of colour with lots of busy restaurants and bars trading all hours of the night. One of the most intriguing aspects of Fremantle is that it is still possible to walk down streets that have remained virtually unchanged since the mid-19th century. As well it is a busy port for passengers and cargoes from all over the world. It is easily accessible by bus, train, ferry and taxi services which operate from Perth.

Fremantle has retained the charm of yesteryear and now has the vitality and colour of a busy fishing and cargo port - definitely a place to visit.
